In a major step toward strengthening security in the border areas of East Jaintia Hills, a new Border Outpost (BOP) was inaugurated on April 11 at Mooriap village under Saipung C&RD Block.
The BOP was inaugurated by Sutnga-Saipung MLA Santa Mary Shylla in the presence of Sumer MDC K Langstang, Deputy Commissioner Shivansh Awasthi, Superintendent of Police Giri Prasad, Public Prosecutor S. Pdang, Daloi of Elaka Sumer K. Mannar, traditional heads, and local residents.
In her address, MLA Shylla expressed gratitude to the district administration and police for their efforts in fulfilling the long-pending demand of the people. She said the new outpost will address long-standing concerns related to safety and insecurity, particularly in villages such as Mooriap, Umkyrpong, Lakasein, Samasi, Mynthlu, Kremmyrsiang, Pala, and Mynthning. She encouraged residents to stay alert, report security concerns to the authorities, and support efforts aimed at improving governance in the region.
Shylla also stressed the importance of bringing development to the border areas and reiterated the government’s commitment to uplifting communities living in remote and vulnerable regions.

Deputy Commissioner Shivansh Awasthi said the BOP will improve access to police services for residents who previously had to travel long distances. He also highlighted other development efforts supported by the local MLA, including the construction of roads, community halls, and the distribution of ambulances. He mentioned the Police Infrastructure Renovation Fund (PIRF), which is helping to enhance police working conditions and assets across the district. Awasthi also raised concern over the issue of child marriage and urged the public to report such incidents for timely intervention.

Superintendent of Police Giri Prasad said the BOP would play a key role in strengthening policing efforts, enhancing public safety, and fostering trust between the police and the community.
Others who spoke at the programme included Sumer MDC K Langstang, Additional SP S Paslein, and headmen of Lakasein and Umkyrpong villages, all of whom welcomed the development and expressed support for the outpost and its personnel.
