    The District Magistrate, East Jaintia Hills District under Section 144 CrPC prohibited Sand mining and extraction of rocks and stones from river bed with immediate effect.

    The order further prohibited pollution of rivers due to the stones quarrying, etc.

    Indiscriminate quarrying which may lead to the outflow of stone and minerals into the river and downstream from the hills slopes, according to the order.

    Any Destruction of vegetations on the slopes, damages the water sources and destroy aquatic of rocks and stones from river bed life is banned in the district.

    The order was in view of reports of illegal sand mining activities and extraction of rocks and stones from river bodies etc, in certain pockets of the District.

    The National Green Tribunal (NGT) is monitoring such illegal sand and stones mining activities in the State and appropriate direction had been issued.
