The District Magistrate, East Khasi Hills District has under Section 144 CrPC prohibited illegal quarrying in the hill slopes within ROW (Right of Way) of National Highways within East Khasi Hills District without obtaining Quarry Permit and other Clearance Certificates from the Competent Authority (s).

The order is necessitated in view of reports that illegal quarrying/earth cutting is taking place within ROW (Right of Way)  of National Highway all along the Shillong Bypass, including Thangshalai Village and because the order received from the National Green Tribunal, Principal Bench, New Delhi restrains any person, company or authority, to carry out any mining and quarrying activity anywhere in the country without obtaining Valid Quarry Permit and other Clearance Certificates prescribed by EIA Notification 2006 of MoEF & CC, Government of India and as per rules prescribed by the Government of Meghalaya.

Moreover, such indiscriminate quarrying along the Shillong Bypass has led to landslips along the slopes and such activities will further loosen the soil all along the ROW (Right of Way) thereby posing a risk of further collapse, thus endangering commuters.

Anyone found in violation of the order is liable for prosecution under Section 188 CrPC. The order comes into force with immediate effect and remains in force till further orders.
