  • Mild earthquake of 4.1 magnitude jolts Shillong and nearby areas, no damage reported

    Shillong and its adjoining areas were shaken by a low-intensity earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale on Tuesday. The tremor struck at 12:34 PM, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Guwahati.

    The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) confirmed the earthquake’s epicentre at a depth of 10 km in South West Khasi Hills, Meghalaya. Tremors were also felt in parts of Assam and West Bengal, where residents experienced mild shaking.

    Fortunately, no casualties or structural damage have been reported so far. The NCS officially posted details of the seismic event on X (formerly Twitter), stating:
    “EQ of M: 4.1, On: 21/01/2025 12:34:02 IST, Lat: 25.34 N, Long: 91.17 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: South West Khasi Hills, Meghalaya.”
