The All Meghalaya Midday Meal Workers Union (AMMMWU) on Wednesday called off its protest after the state government’s assurance to enhance their monthly honorarium.

Informing this after coming out of a meeting chaired by the Commissioner & Secretary of Education Dr BDR Tiwari, adviser of the union KL Pariat said, “We have decided to temporarily suspend our agitation to allow the government to complete the process for enhancing the honorarium before the end of November. Failing which, we will resume our agitation in December.”

He informed that during the meeting, the education department had informed the delegation that they had already submitted a proposal for enhancement on August 11.

According to him, the proposal was to enhance the monthly honorarium to cook cum helpers from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 for month of April to November 2022 and for the month of February to March, 2023.

There are over 18,776 cook cum helpers.

“Once the cabinet approves the proposal, the midday meal cook in Meghalaya will get Rs 2,000 from the state government and Rs 1,000 from the centre,” he said while adding that the government had also assured to pay the honorarium for 12 months.
