MIDC cancels proposed land acquisition at Umsian-Mawkdoh in Ri Bhoi district

The Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation Ltd. (MIDC) in its 240th Board Meeting held on May 29, unanimously decided to cancel the proposed land acquisition in the Umsiang–Mawkdoh area of Ri Bhoi District.
This decision came after a careful review of recent developments and public feedback.
The land in question was originally identified based purely on its strategic location and suitability for establishing an industrial estate. Its proximity to Assam’s upcoming Electronic City made it a promising site for green and white category industries—industries that are non-polluting, environmentally sustainable, and consistent with Meghalaya’s ecological ethos. The objective behind this initiative was to catalyze industrial growth in the region, generate employment for local communities, and contribute meaningfully to the state’s long-term economic goals.
Accordingly, an Expression of Interest (EOI) was floated on March 7, 2025, and was duly published in leading English and Khasi newspapers. Six landowners responded to the notice, expressing interest. However, at no stage was any land acquisition completed, nor was any financial transaction undertaken. Allegations that ₹100 crore was spent on this process are entirely false. The actual sanctioned budget for the land acquisition was less than 5% of the amount being incorrectly cited in various media outlets
Over the past several weeks, the Corporation received numerous RTI queries and public representations, many of which were based on misleading or inaccurate information. Additionally, several groups and organizations submitted letters opposing the establishment of an industrial estate in the Umsiang area. Furthermore, contrary to claims made by some parties, no discussions or consultations were held between officials of MIDC Ltd. and the headmen or traditional authorities of the local Raid regarding this matter.
“In light of these factors, and after evaluating all dimensions, the Board of Directors has concluded that it would not be appropriate to proceed with the project in its current form. The Board feels that it is in the best interest to cancel this land acquisition if it cannot use the area as an industrial estate. As such, the proposal stands officially withdrawn,” Chairman of MIDC James K Sangma said in a statement on Monday.
“MIDC remains fully committed to sustainable, balanced, and inclusive industrial development in Meghalaya. Although this particular initiative will not go forward, the Corporation will continue to explore and promote opportunities that align with the aspirations of the people and the developmental priorities of the state. It is also hoped that media houses will exercise greater responsibility by verifying facts directly with the Corporation before publishing reports that could mislead the public,” he stated.
