Insan Hamesha Lyndem, a young learner from the hills of Sohra, Meghalaya, has been awarded the 2025 Huayu Enrichment Scholarship by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education. The scholarship will support her six-month study trip to Taiwan to further her Mandarin language education.

Lyndem began learning Mandarin in 2022 at the Taiwan Education Center in Assam Don Bosco University (ADBU). In 2023, she appeared for the Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL) and earned a certificate from Taiwan’s Ministry of Education, qualifying her for the scholarship.

Each year, Taiwan offers the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship to Indian students as part of its effort to promote the learning of Mandarin, strengthen cultural ties, and enhance bilateral exchanges. Recipients are granted a monthly stipend of 25,000 New Taiwan Dollars (approximately Rs 65,447) during their stay.

Lyndem, along with three of her classmates from ADBU—including students from Assam and Manipur—was selected for the scholarship following a recommendation from their Mandarin teacher, Kuei-Mi Li.

Reflecting on her journey, Lyndem said, “Mandarin is not just a language—it’s a gateway. From tech companies and international trade to pop culture, it plays a big role. I wanted to comprehend that world, not just read about it.”

She added that her learning experience helped her grow in patience, communication, and cross-cultural understanding. “Mandarin is not just about words—it also helped me to focus, slow down and observe.”

Calling the Huayu Scholarship “more than just a study program,” Lyndem sees it as “a bridge” to explore Taiwan’s vibrant culture, language, and values. “I was surprised when I got selected—it was a mix of excitement, pride, and gratitude. All thanks to our Laoshi, Ms. Kuei-Mi Li, who kept encouraging us.”

Encouraging others to follow her path, Lyndem emphasized the value of learning Mandarin in today’s globalized world. “With remote work and global networking, knowing Mandarin gives you an edge. And with the Taiwan scholarship, you don’t just learn the language—you live it.”
