Meghalaya’s first-ever Women’s State League set to launch at SSA Stadium

The first-ever Meghalaya Women’s State League (MWSL) is all set to begin on September 20, with the opening ceremony scheduled at the SSA Stadium, Shillong. This landmark tournament will bring together the top women’s teams from district associations affiliated with the Meghalaya Football Association (MFA).
For years, the MFA has envisioned a statewide women’s league, and that goal is finally coming to fruition with the support of the Meghalaya government. The MWSL will also pave the way for Meghalaya clubs to participate in the Indian Women’s League second division (IWL 2) for the first time, creating a pathway for national-level competition.
The league follows the model of the highly successful Meghalaya State League for men’s clubs, which has also received government backing. District associations that previously organised local women’s leagues were invited to nominate their champions and runners-up for participation in the inaugural edition.
A total of 13 teams from eight affiliated associations, spread across three zones—Khliehriat, Shillong, and Tyrsad—will compete in the tournament. Participating teams include:
- Ri-Bhoi District Sports Association: Na Rympei Football Academy, Attacker Youth Club Pahamsyiem
- Shillong Sports Association: Laitkor SC, Pay For Right Football Academy
- Mawkyrwat District Sports Association: Jakrem SC, Mawten SC
- Pyndengumiong District Sports Association: Young Sports Social & Cultural Club, Bright Future SSCC
- East Jaintia Hills District Football Association: Diengshynrum SC
- Tyrsad Area Sports Association: Mawlum Tyrsad SC, Mawsawrit SC
- Riwar Mihngi Football Association: Lapalang SSCC
- Laskein Block Sports Association: Chirupheiwei Nongkynrih FC
The MFA has stated that further details, including fixtures and schedules, will be released in due course. The launch of the MWSL marks a historic moment for women’s football in Meghalaya, offering players greater exposure, competition, and a chance to progress to national-level leagues.
