Meghalaya’s economy soars: CM Conrad sets ambitious Rs 1.4 lakh crore GDP target by 2032

Amidst the patriotic fervor of the 79th Independence Day celebrations at J.N. Stadium, Polo Grounds, Shillong, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma hoisted the National Flag, took the Rashtriya Salute, and delivered a landmark address highlighting Meghalaya’s remarkable economic transformation and the state government’s Vision 2032.
“Friends, it is my privilege to address you for the eighth consecutive Independence Day, as your Chief Minister. When I look back at the journey we began in 2018, it fills me with hope, confidence, and pride. Despite the global pandemic and other challenges, we are marching on the road of progress,” said CM Conrad, setting a tone of optimism and ambition.
The Chief Minister announced that Meghalaya is now the second fastest-growing state in India, second only to Tamil Nadu, with a growth rate of 9.66% for 2024-25 at constant prices—nearly double the 5.1% growth rate recorded in 2018. He emphasized that Meghalaya is the only state in the country to achieve consistent growth of about 10% over three consecutive years post-pandemic, a milestone he called “an achievement that all of us should be very proud of.”

Detailing the state’s economic trajectory, CM Conrad said, “Our growth rates in 2015-16 was 2%, 2016-17 was 5%, 2017-18 was 4%, 2018-19 was 5%, and 2019-20 was 5%. In contrast, the growth rates in 2022-23 was 10%, 2023-24 was 11%, and 2024-25 is 10%. This achievement is the result of years of persistence, careful planning, and the hard work of the Government.”
Highlighting Meghalaya’s GDP growth, he noted that the state’s economy has doubled from less than Rs 30,000 crores in 2018 to Rs 59,626 crores today. Looking forward, CM Conrad announced an ambitious goal: “In the next seven and a half years, we will more than double our GDP from the current Rs 60,000 crores to Rs 1,40,000 crores. This increased GDP will create more jobs for our youth, more opportunities for every citizen, and make Meghalaya one of the top 10 states in the country. This is our Vision 2032, and the Government is making every effort to make it a reality.”
Reflecting on his interactions with citizens across Meghalaya, he added, “Some of my most cherished memories come from connecting with farmers, youth, women, headmen, community leaders and senior citizens. These experiences have guided the Government’s priorities.”
To ensure sustained growth, CM Conrad unveiled “Mission 10”, a 10-point commitment focusing on connectivity, piped drinking water, reliable power, high-speed internet, housing for all, affordable healthcare, nutrition and early childhood development, quality education, effective service delivery, and a caring, empowering state.
