Meghalaya yet to receive communication from Centre on CUET exemption

The state government is yet to receive any official communication on the Centre’s decision to exempt colleges affiliated to the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) from the Common University Entrance Test (CUET).

“No, we have not received in writing (from the Centre) because as I said that these are matters that are very vast in nature in the sense that there are different universities and colleges throughout the country,” Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma told reporters on Tuesday when asked about the status of the CUET in the state.

“Therefore, the exact documentation and exact language may be a matter of concern for the Government of India I am presuming,” he added.

On May 2, Sangma after his meeting with the Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in New Delhi had informed that the Centre had agreed to exempt the affiliated colleges in Meghalaya.

When asked, the chief minister said the meeting with the union minister had clarified the entire aspect of the matter.

He said that initially, the notification was that any college and any student, who are earlier in fact would apply to any college that is affiliated to NEHU would have to give the exam.

“(However), once we clarify to the minister saying that the different colleges which are affiliated are affiliated (to NEHU) because there is no other university to affiliate,” Sangma said adding “The minister understood the problem and said well in that case only the colleges which falls under the academic programs of NEHU will have to go through the CUET and other colleges which are affiliated and only for the sake of affiliation are with NEHU the students applying to those colleges will now no longer have to apply or give CUET examination.”

The chief minister further expressed optimism that the Centre will soon come up with a notification on this regard.

“I am very sure that we will receive the communication and I want to assure the students that the commitment given by the union minister is very clear that they would not have to give the exam if they are not applying for the courses in NEHU,” he stated.
