Meghalaya woman assaulted by men, 5 arrested after video goes viral

Five persons have been arrested on Wednesday for their involvement in the brutal assault of a woman at a remote village in West Garo Hills District.

The incident took place at Teksragre village under Dadenggre subdivision on Tuesday afternoon, West Garo Hills SP Abraham T said.

Police have taken swift action after a video clipping – showing men of the village mercilessly assaulting a young woman with bamboo sticks despite her crying and begging them to stop – went viral.

“Initially, we have arrested two and just now in the evening, we have arrested another three persons. All five were directly involved in assaulting the woman,” Abraham said while informing that the accused will be produced before the court tomorrow.

He informed that more arrests will be made after taking the statement of the woman, who is at the moment undergoing medical treatment.

Asked, the SP said that a notice will also be issued to the nokma of the village on the incident.
