Meghalaya to mandate driver information display on commercial vehicles

The Meghalaya government has decided to implement a new initiative aimed at enhancing the security and safety of travelers within and to the state.
Accordingly, all commercial vehicle owners will be required to mandatorily display essential information about their drivers, including license details, contact information, name, and address.
This was announced by MDA government spokesperson and Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh after a meeting chaired by the deputy chief in-charge Transport Sniawbhalang Dhar at the Secretariat here on Tuesday.
The primary objective of this initiative is to minimize the possibility of criminal activities being committed using commercial vehicles and to upscale the sense of security among travelers. By knowing who is driving them, passengers will feel safer and more secure, Lyngdoh told reporters.
He added this rule will be applicable to all commercial vehicles across Meghalaya, which includes vehicles that have obtained permits from the transport department through the respective District Transport Officers (DTOs). However, it excludes privately owned vehicles, government-owned vehicles, and vehicles owned by government corporations and undertakings.
Once the notification is issued, commercial vehicle owners will have one month to comply with the new regulation, he said adding that this initiative is expected to enhance the overall security ecosystem in Meghalaya, particularly with the rise in tourist footfall .
