Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday said his government has spent about Rs 1000 crore in the development, renovation or building of government lower primary, upper primary, secondary and higher secondary schools across the state.

Inaugurating the new school building of Mibonpara Secondary School, Sangma said that the government is focussed and committed to bring transformative changes and developments in the education sector in spite of its various challenges.

“Through the concerted efforts of the government, leaders, officials and the community we can overcome these challenges and bring changes in the education system,” he said.

Sangma, informed that the state government gives the topmost priority to social sectors.

“Education has always been a priority sector for us and the government out of the 30,000 Cr Budget allocates 2,500 Cr to Education making it the highest budgetary allocation for we believe that progress and development can be brought about only by Education and through the development of our human resources,” he said.

The Chief Minister also informed that 50 per cent of the population of Meghalaya is below the age of 20 years and schemes, programs and policies of the government need to be directed towards developing this asset of the state that is the youth.

Further, the Chief Minister said that Chokpot because of its strategic location is an important zone for connectivity network not only for the South Garo Hills district but for the adjoining districts as well. “The Deku-Chokpot road has already been sanctioned by the World Bank and Chokpot-Sibbari road will soon be taken up as Chokpot is an important net connecting zone,” he informed.

Concluding his speech, the Chief Minister urged the students to stay committed, work hard and have love and respect for their roots, the state and the country. “You are the future and the hope of the state, you are the future nation builders who will take our state and our country to greater heights of progress and prosperity therefore work hard to achieve academic success while developing values that will make you responsible citizens,” he said.
