In a landmark moment for women’s football in the state, the Meghalaya Football Association (MFA) has officially announced the 13 teams that will take part in the inaugural edition of the Meghalaya Women’s State League (MWSL), scheduled to begin in August 2025. The tournament will mark the first statewide women’s football competition, uniting top teams from district associations under one banner and opening new pathways for clubs to compete nationally.

Anticipation is high for the MWSL, a long-awaited initiative by the MFA, which will now become a reality with the support of the Meghalaya government. The league is expected to provide a significant boost to women’s football in the state and serve as a stepping stone for Meghalaya clubs aiming to participate in the Indian Women’s League second division (IWL 2) for the first time.

The MWSL will follow the model of the highly successful Meghalaya State League for men’s clubs, also supported by the government. District associations that had organised their own women’s leagues were allowed to nominate the champions and runners-up for the state-level competition.

Eight district associations conducted such leagues, resulting in 13 teams confirming their participation in this pathbreaking all-Meghalaya event. A preparatory meeting with club representatives and senior MFA officials was held on Saturday in Shillong to discuss essential matters related to the upcoming league.

The venues, groupings, fixtures, and exact start date will be announced by the MFA in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, teams and players across the state will be gearing up for this historic event that will crown the champions of Meghalaya.

    The participating teams are:

    • Ri-Bhoi District Sports Association: Na Rympei Football Academy (Champions), Pahamsyiem SC (Runners-up)
    • Shillong Sports Association: Laitkor SC (Champions), Pay For Right Football Academy (Runners-up)
    • Mawkyrwat District Sports Association: Jakrem SC (Champions), Mawten SC (Runners-up)
    • Pyndengumiong District Sports Association: Young Sports Social and Cultural Club (Champions), Bright Future SSCC (Runners-up)
    • East Jaintia Hills District Football Association: Diengshynrum SC (Champions only)
    • Tyrsad Area Sports Association: Mawlum Tyrsad SC (Champions), Mawsawrit SC (Runners-up)
    • Riwar Mihngi Football Association: Lapalang SSCC (Runners-up only)
    • Laskein Block Sports Association: Chirupheiwei Nongkynrih FC (Champions only).
