The state police on Friday issued an advisory urging the citizens to be wary of friend requests on various social media platforms from strangers.

“It is hereby advised to the general public not to fall prey into this scam played by the fraudsters and to be wary of friend requests from strangers,” East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Sylvester Nongtnger said.

He informed that the advisory was issued after receiving various complaints regarding fraudsters (women) who send friend requests on various social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram) etc and ask the victim (men) to share their Whatsapp number.

On getting the phone number, the fraudsters seduce the victim for a video call and entice them to get them involved in sexual activity.

The fraudsters meanwhile record all these activities and later blackmail the victim by asking payment from them, the SP said.
