The Office of the State Tuberculosis Officer, National Health Mission, Meghalaya, commemorated World Tuberculosis Day 2025 under the global theme, “Yes, We Can End TB: Commit, Invest, Deliver.”

Speaking at the event, Health Minister Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh said the government aims not only to complete TB screening but also to ensure all patients receive the full range of assistance. She highlighted the role of traditional healers, who provide around 36% of treatment across the state, in bridging gaps in identification, testing, and treatment.

Lyngdoh congratulated the 625 villages identified as TB-free, adding that community participation plays a key role in eliminating the disease by addressing barriers in the TB care cascade.

Meghalaya launched the 100-Day TB Elimination Campaign in December 2024, focusing on high-burden districts including East Khasi Hills, Ri Bhoi, East Garo Hills, West Garo Hills, and South Garo Hills. In 2024, the state reported 4,573 TB cases. Since the campaign’s launch, 867 new cases have been detected. Meghalaya was recognised as one of the top-performing states in the campaign.

Assistant Programme Officer of NTEP, Dr. AJ Rynjah, noted that India’s TB efforts have led to an 18% decline in TB cases, double the global average. Meghalaya currently operates 15 mobile X-ray units and 93 NAT machines, providing 85% upfront molecular diagnosis. The state also offers free transport and diagnostic tests under its Comprehensive TB Care Plan.

The government has adopted over 4,500 TB patients under the Meghalaya Comprehensive TB Care initiative, becoming a Universal Ni-kshay Mitra. Meghalaya is also the only state to provide nutritional kits worth Rs 2,000 per month to TB patients and their families.

Villages in East Khasi Hills were honoured for achieving TB-free status, and district-level awards were distributed.

TB survivor Arki Nengnong shared his recovery journey and credited early detection, treatment, and support from the Meghalaya State Skill Development Society for his rehabilitation.
