Meghalaya marked International Day for Biological Diversity 2025 in Shillong

Meghalaya marked the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) 2025 with a state-level celebration held at the U Soso Tham Auditorium in Shillong on Thursday. The event was themed “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development”, underscoring the critical connection between biodiversity and the achievement of the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The programme was attended by the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife & Biodiversity), H.C. Chaudhary, as the Chief Guest. Other key participants included NEHU Botany Department Head Prof. S.K. Barik; Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), Pawan K. Agrahari; and Forest & Environment Department Secretary and Member Secretary of the Meghalaya Biodiversity Board (MBB), R. Nainamalai.
As part of the celebration, the dignitaries unveiled a series of awareness materials, including informative posters and a Coffee Table Book titled “Caves of Meghalaya”. A documentary film showcasing successful community-led conservation efforts by Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs) was also screened.
One of the main highlights was the presentation of the State Level Biodiversity Awards 2025. Mawtneng BMC from Bhoirymbong Block, Ri-Bhoi District, was honoured as the “Best Biodiversity Management Committee”. The award for “Best Conservation and Sustainable Use of Bioresources” was jointly awarded to Phlangwanbroi BMC and Kmawan Rum BMC, both located in Mawsynram Block, East Khasi Hills District.
The Secretary of Mawtneng BMC delivered a powerful message on the community’s role in conserving biodiversity while promoting sustainable livelihoods.
Since the formation of the Meghalaya Biodiversity Board in 2012, the state has actively observed IDB at both state and district levels. The annual event aims to raise awareness and inspire action in alignment with international goals, including the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework adopted at COP15 in 2022.
The 2025 observance reaffirmed Meghalaya’s dedication to biodiversity conservation and highlighted the essential role of grassroots efforts in protecting the state’s ecological wealth.
