Meghalaya launches Rs 20 Cr revamp of Ward’s Lake to boost urban tourism

In a major push to urban tourism and recreational infrastructure, the Meghalaya government on June 3 launched the Ward’s Lake Revitalization Program, marking a new chapter in the city’s development. The highlight of the event was the formal handover of Ward’s Lake from the Forest Department to the Tourism Department, signalling a strategic shift towards enhancing visitor experiences.
Speaking at the ceremony, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma announced that a tender for the revitalization work would be floated soon, with the lake’s section estimated to cost Rs 20 crore. An additional sanctioned amount will cover the development of a new promenade. “This project holds great potential—not just for tourism, but also for local musicians, filmmakers, and calendar-based cultural events,” Sangma said.
Locally known as Nan Polok, Ward’s Lake is a historic artificial lake constructed in 1894, long serving as a recreational hub for locals and tourists. The revitalization plan, with an investment of Rs 18 crore, aims to transform the lake into a vibrant cultural and leisure destination. Proposed features include sound and light shows, musical fountains, cafes, entertainment zones for families and children, and extended visiting hours till 10 PM.
Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh highlighted the cultural significance of the site, calling it the oldest artificial lake in Northeast India. “Office-goers will now have the option to take a walk around the lake after work hours,” he added.
The project will also see infrastructural upgrades to support higher footfall, including the widening of roads and creation of pedestrian-friendly walkways. The broader plan includes a 1.2 km promenade opposite the lake, complete with plazas, shops, vending zones, parking, and restaurants—designed to boost local businesses and community engagement.
The revitalization will be carried out in two phases. The first will focus on introducing new entertainment and leisure elements, with the ultimate goal of making the lake a focal point for tourism and economic activity in the region.
Among those present at the event were Tourism Director Cyril V D Diengdoh, Commissioner and Secretary Vijay Kumar D, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Harish Chandra Chaudhary, Chief Administrative Officer of Meghalayan Age Limited Robert Lyngdoh, along with officials from the Forest and Tourism Departments.
