Meghalaya lacking behind in smart meters implementation: Mondal

Meghalaya is one of the few states which is lacking behind as far as the smart meters implementation is concerned.
According to the power minister AT Mondal, the main reason is because some of the companies – which have participated in the tendering process – were found to be blacklisted somewhere.
“We are late even for finalization of our tenders because of some companies getting blacklisted somewhere and recently I had raised this issue with Union Minister of Power that we don’t know when somebody cast their tender only at the fag end of the entire system that we come to know that some of the companies are blacklisted somewhere,” he told reporters.
“He (union minister has) assured and instructed that henceforth all blacklisted companies willl be shown in a portal especially designed for this purpose so that when tendering process is done we can check through that portal if the companies are blacklisted or not,” he added.

The power minister has also assured that the government will take all consumers into confidence to see that there is smooth implementation of smart meters in the state.
Asked, Mondal said, “Yes, when you go for a new system or new technology, apprehension is always there. It is not only with smart meters. All states have gone ahead with implementation of smart meters. There were lots of complaints and ultimately those issues have been resolved and smart meters have been implemented. We are one of the states, which are still lacking behind in as far as smart meters implementation is concerned.”
