The state BJP on Monday congratulated the Meghalaya police following the breakthrough in the recent murder of a newlywed tourist from Indore at Sohra.

In a statement, BJP state chief spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang said, “The recent murder of a newlywed tourist from Indore, which had sent shock waves through the state and nation, has been finally cracked, and BJP Meghalaya congratulates Meghalaya Police, particularly Shri Vivek Siyem, IPS, SP of East Khasi Hills and his team, SDRF, NDRF, Adventure Club team of Sohra and all the people of the region who strived tirelessly for days to locate the missing couple.”

With this breakthrough in the case, Kharkrang said the Meghalaya Police has yet again proved itself to be one of the most professional forces in the country.

“We understand that the state police and search teams have had to work under tremendous pressure considering the slander campaign that was carried out by certain sections of the national media. Ordinary mortals would have buckled under such onslaught of defamation but our state police and SDRF stood tall, with the arrest of Sonam Raghuvanshi and her accomplices, coming as the final redemption,” he said.

Stating that Meghalaya is a safe haven for tourists and always will be, Kharkrang said, “Our state, one of the most beautiful in the country, is also one of the most peaceful areas in India with warm hospitable people. Meghalaya can give in-depth lessons to the world on women safety and respect for life.”

“Yet, certain sections of the national media had no qualms in painting our state with adjectives such as ‘crime prone hills’.  We hope that these publications will now acknowledge their mistake and go public with it,” he said while requesting that such media houses function in a more responsible manner in future and verify facts before airing any kind of news or views.
