The Meghalaya High Court on Friday directed the Jowai Municipal Board to indicate the long-term plans to resolve the garbage issue in Jowai, the district headquarter of West Jaintia Hills District.

In its order, the two-member bench said, “The Municipal Board should file an affidavit when the matter appears next indicating the immediate future steps and long-term plans to resolve the problem.”

The court has also deferred the hearing to June 17 after the petitioner – Synjuk Ki Waheh Shnong Jowai – has agreed with the submission made on behalf of the respondent authorities particularly the Jowai Municipal Board that some progress has been made.

The Board also informed it is working with all Shnongs and has appealed to the residents to segregate the waste so that the disposal thereof is easier.

The petitioner also reports that there has been some movement in the garbage getting removed.
