Meghalaya government on Friday decided to give an additional leave of six months for government employees undergoing transplantation of human organs.

The decision was approved during the first meeting of the state Cabinet chaired by the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma at Sohra.

“There is a practice in the government, where government employees in situations where certain ailments are there, additional leave is given to them depending upon the seriousness of the ailments. In addition to what is there already, today the cabinet has decided that for government servants undergoing transplantation of human organs, we will give an additional leave up to six months for that particular operation or that particular plantation to take place,” Sangma announced.

“This is over and above the provisions that are there for taking leave and this is of course very complicated and very specific cases and hence, it is not general case but as you understand these are complicated situations and they required the necessary support from the government and government and cabinet today has decided to give up to six months additional leave for government servants undergoing transplantation of human organs,” he told reporters.

Stating that the new provision is totally based on humanitarian ground, the CM said, “In situations like these, they do need time to recover and for treatment and the entire procedure to happen. Very few cases have come up, I do hope and pray no cases come up but even one case like this is important where we need provision in the rules so that there is no ambiguity in the future.”
