The state government has proposed to do away with The Meghalaya Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014.

This was informed during the hearing conducted by the Meghalaya High Court on Wednesday.  The petition was filed by the Meghalaya & Greater Shillong Progressive Hawkers & Street Vendors Association (MGSPHSVA).

In its order, the Court said it was informed on behalf of the state that the state proposes to do away with the state enactment and follow the Central statute pertaining to street-vending.

It was also informed that the matter is before the cabinet for its consideration for an appropriate ordinance to be issued in accordance with law.

The state further informed the Court that upon the state law being repealed, a set of rules in accordance with the Central statute may be brought into effect immediately.
