The state government has directed the health department to submit a proposal on the requirement of additional manpower for effective handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in the state.

“We have asked the health department to anticipate the requirement and send the proposal to the government for a necessary decision to ensure there is no shortage of manpower,” Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong told reporters after a daily review meeting held on Monday.

Stating that manpower is an issue especially in view of the surge in COVID-19 cases in the state, Tynsong said manpower is needed be it for testing or reporting.

On the delay of testing, the deputy chief minister said that the issue was also discussed during the review meeting and the government has already taken steps to improve the testing capacity in the state.

Reacting to BJP MLA Sanbor Shullai’s statement against the alleged failure of the health department, Tynsong however said that as responsible representative, it is not wise to speak without thinking.

“It (COVID-19 issue) is not only the responsibility of the health department, AL Hek or Prestone alone. We also do not say that we are perfect but people should come forward with suggestions so that we can further improve the system. However, we leave it to the wisdom of the people to judge,” he said.
