Meghalaya govt issues alert to DCs, SPs to thwart Bangladesh infiltration

The Meghalaya government has directed all Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and Superintendents of Police (SPs) to be more proactive in preventing infiltration from Bangladesh into the state.
This decision follows the recent arrest of six members of a gang of armed men, led by a Bangladesh Police constable, who crossed over into Rongdangai village, assaulted a local shopkeeper, and looted cash and valuables.
Speaking to media persons after chairing a review meeting on Wednesday, Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong said, “Instruction has already been given to all DCs and SPs to be more proactive (in preventing infiltration) because quite a number of incidents has happened.”
He informed that illegal infiltration is taking place everywhere right from East Jaintia Hills upto Dalu in Garo Hills along the international border with Bangladesh.
“We are alert and I am very sure our police force will be able to nab and also to push back those infiltrators,” Tynsong added.
Asked, Tynsong informed that the state government has already submitted a report on the recent arrest of the Bangladeshi nationals to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
“In fact, as per police report, it is (a case related to) criminal activities and nothing beyond that. Their intention is very clear to rob…”
Further, the deputy chief minister informed that one of the main accused in the case, who has even thrown explosives there, has managed to escape and cross over to Bangladesh.
“It seems he has already crossed back to Bangladesh. However, our police and BSF are on the job (to arrest him),” he stated.
When asked, Tynsong said, “I don’t say cop or no cop but what I am saying is Bangladeshi people created these illegal activities. Therefore, instructions have been given to all SPs to all the DCs to be more proactive and to ensure such incidents do not repeat again.”
On the BSF’s declaring “operation alert” throughout the Indo-Bangla border, the deputy chief minister said, “the state government is also adopting the same policy where we have a two-way system of dealing with this kind of illegal activities or illegal entrance to the country. So our police are doing the job as well as BSF are doing their job and I am very sure with this close coordination between our state police and the BSF will be able to overcome all these challenges.”
