The State Cabinet on Friday approved the proposal to extend the term of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) by another six months.

Addressing media persons, Deputy Chief Minister in-charge District Council Affairs (DCA) Prestone Tynsong said, “The Cabinet has approved the proposal for extension of the present term of both KHADC and JHADC for another six months. Now, the state government will send this recommendation to the Governor for approval and for accordingly issuing the necessary order on this.”

Tynsong said last year, the Governor has granted both the ADCs for constitution of the delimitation committees, which are now on the job as per the prescribed guidelines.

However, the delimitation committees have requested the executive committee of both KHADC and JHADC for extension.

“Accordingly, the EC of the two ADCs have forwarded (the proposal) seeking a six months extension. Therefore, accordingly the government has granted and approved the proposal,” he said.

According to him, public hearings are being held for delimitation of the constituencies under the two ADCs.

The deputy CM said after a few months, the government will ask the two ADCs to submit a report on the delimitation and thereafter, the election process will be initiated.
