The state government has decided to allow students to appear for their respective examinations outside the state.

The issue was flagged before the review meeting by the Health Minister AL Hek that some of the students who returned to Meghalaya recently from different states need to go back to their places of study to appear for their examinations.

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong told reporters that most of these students are also yet to complete their quarantine period.

“Taking into consideration that they need to appear their examinations, we have decided to allow them to go back to their respective institutions in different parts of India,” he said after the meeting.

Asked, Tynsong said a dedicated team has been created to facilitate facilitate their journey but the train or flight fares will not be paid by the government.

Meanwhile, the deputy CM informed that a total of 11,916 people stranded across the country due to the COVID-19 lockdown have returned to the state as on June 1.

He said a special train from Mumbai has been arranged to bring back over 400 people adding that the number may go up since the registration is still going on.

Earlier in a separate briefing, Health Minister AL Hek informed that another 6,000 stranded people are expected to return to the state.
