Meghalaya Governor honours teachers at 64th State-Level Teachers’ Day, stresses education policies

The Directorate of School Education and Literacy organised the 64th State-Level Teachers’ Day celebration on Friday at the U Soso Tham Auditorium in Shillong, bringing together teachers from across the state. Governor C.H. Vijayashankar, the chief guest, presented the prestigious State Awards to outstanding educators from all districts.
The awardees included Raynold Basaiawmoit, Assistant Teacher at Gorkha Secondary School, 3rd Mile; Dafrit Nongkynrih, Tynring Government L.P. School; Firemoris Marngar, Head Teacher, Pungphreit Government L.P. School, West Khasi Hills; Sr. Cicilia Kujur, Vice Principal, St. Thomas Higher Secondary School, Mairang, Eastern West Khasi Hills; Sengman Sangma, Lower Umsih Government L.P. School, South West Khasi Hills; Diamond Paswet, Government Boys’ Higher Secondary School, Jowai; Tasiana Kymphat, Tluh Secondary School, East Jaintia Hills; Sukanta Bhattacharjee, St. Michael’s Higher Secondary School, Umsning, Ri Bhoi District; Aswini Kumar Sarma, Headmaster, Rongrenggiri Model Deficit Secondary School, Williamnagar, East Garo Hills; Maximus M. Kujur, Assistant Teacher, Bajengdoba Government U.P. School, Resubelpara, North Garo Hills; Alithson G. Momin, Assistant Teacher, Ampanggre Government L.P. School; and Purida I. Sangma, Headmistress, Chitoktak U.P. School, West Garo Hills, Tura.
In his address, Governor Vijayashankar described teachers as the backbone of nation-building and highlighted their role in shaping responsible citizens. Reflecting on his personal connection to the profession, he shared that his father was a school headmaster, giving him a deep appreciation for the dedication and responsibility teachers carry.

The Governor also stressed the importance of effective implementation of education policies, urging government officials to ensure they reach students across Meghalaya and create real impact. He noted that teachers, alongside mothers as a child’s first educators, play a crucial role in helping students distinguish right from wrong. Quoting former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, he added, “True education is about building life, character, and values, not just acquiring information.”

The celebration concluded with a cultural programme honouring the dedication of Meghalaya’s educators. The Governor also launched a video awareness campaign on IFC tablets under the PM POSHAN scheme in the presence of Additional Chief Secretary Dr. Shakil P. Ahammed, Director of School Education B.J. Kharshandi, and other senior officials.
