The Meghalaya Directorate of School Education & Literacy (DSEL) called for the closure of schools located near or close to Rivers, Ponds and Lakes  in order to avoid any untoward incident while authorizing the Deputy Commissioners of various districts to decide on the need for closure of Schools in their respective jurisdiction as per assessment of the situation and ground reports of situations.

The DSEL’s authorization for closure of schools was in view of weather forecast issued by the Indian Meteorological Department, Meteorological Centre, Shillong of torrential heavy rainfall in most parts of the state.

School authorities in the State are instructed not to allow students to step outside the school during school hours, except for using the washrooms and that too in small batches and not in big numbers.

Students are to be instructed to use umbrellas and raincoats whenever they step out to use the washrooms. Students should not be allowed to stand or queue near trees, electric poles or beneath electrical wires in order to avoid any mishap.

Parents fetching their children from school may be allowed to assemble in a safe place where they can be free from any sort of danger or harm.

Schools may assess those students who may have been fully drenched in view of the rainfall and accordingly contact the parents for allowing them to leave the school for today, in order to avoid them falling ill.

Students should not be allowed to play outside or have lunch outside their classrooms in view of the current weather condition.

In view of any emergency, schools may contact the State Emergency Number 112/1070 or the District Emergency Number 1077, except North Garo Hills, which is 9863468868.
