Meghalaya CM to meet US Ambassador over travel advisory

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma will soon meet with the US Ambassador to address the recent travel advisory notification that has linked Meghalaya and other northeastern states to terrorism and violence, seeking its immediate rectification.
Informing this on Tuesday, Sangma said he would meet with the US Ambassador through the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs to inform them that the notification is “absolutely incorrect” and request them to change it.
“I hope they will be satisfied with that explanation and with the support and necessary coordination with the MEA, we should be able to rectify the wrong notification that has come up.”
Sangma asserted that Meghalaya is absolutely safe and it has been proven beyond doubt.
The US government had recently issued an advisory asking its citizens to reconsider visiting Meghalalya and other northeastern states due to terrorism and violence.
The chief minister has also expressed disappointment with the media for asking questions that he believes are irrelevant and perpetuate negative stereotypes about the state’s safety.
Responding to a query about Meghalaya’s safety, Sangma said, “You doubt that Meghalaya is safe that you are asking me that question. It is sad that even media today feels and talks and asks questions like that.”
Sangma urged the media to become advocates for the state and its people, rather than perpetuating negative narratives. “I would encourage the media please don’t encourage this kind of report. I know you may be looking for your TRP, you should be saying that these questions are irrelevant. Enough is enough. This kind of question should not be asked.”
Sangma emphasized the importance of responsible journalism, stating that the media should draw a line and realize that perpetuating negative stereotypes about Meghalaya is unnecessary and creates a wrong image of the state. “I think the press also has to become responsible at certain points in time where you draw the line yourself and realize that let’s not get into this as it is unnecessary creating wrong image of Meghalaya.”
