National People’s Party (NPP) chief and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma drove himself to the polling station and casted his vote after waiting for 2.5 hours in a long queue on Friday

Sangma reached Walbakgre polling station at 6.30 am with the hope to be amongst the early voters but had to wait for 2.5 hours plus to cast his vote.

Speaking to the media, he expressed his optimism on the turnout. He said that he has relieved his security, driver and team to enable them to cast their votes.

He chose to drive from his residence to the polling station this morning.

“Everyone from the team has been sent to cast their votes. Few security guards from the district, who have already cast their votes, are with me,” he said.

“So the idea is everybody of course is voting and everybody’s vote is the same. Whether you are the driver of the chief minister or you’re the security guard of the chief minister or you’re the chief minister himself, everybody has one vote so it is important that every single individual should cast their vote and hence, I have asked my driver and my security personnel that they don’t need to worry too much I will drive myself to the polling station and security also will take the local security from Tura or those who already have casted their votes and I would want every single individual in my staff to ensure that they go and cast their vote and hence, I decided to drive myself to the polling station today,” the CM said.

Meghalaya records 61.94% voter turnout by 3:24 PM
