Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday directed the different district administrations to provide immediate relief materials to families affected by rain related incidents in seven districts of the state.

Over 400 houses were damaged affecting more than 940 people following heavy rainfall on Sunday.

“Yesterday because of strong winds and heavy rainfall in certain parts of the state…seven districts were affected and about 400 houses were damaged and immediately I have asked the district administrations and the departments to provide the relief materials to the affected houses and the process has started and different kinds of relief materials including CGI sheets are now being given to the households that were damaged,” Sangma informed.

He said that the government has also changed the guidelines to allow respective deputy commissioners to assess and distribute the CGI sheets at the district level.

“Earlier during this kind of situation, the guidelines had only permitted rice and other food items to be distributed on an emergency basis and different housing materials were not part of this emergency distribution and work but we have changed the guidelines in the past years and now the respective deputy commissioners at their own level without taking any kind of necessary approvals from the state authorities can assess and distribute the CGI sheets at the district level based on their own assessment,” the CM said.

483 houses damaged in 29 villages under 7 districts of Meghalaya, following heavy rainfall

“This has really streamline the process now and the process for housing which used to take six months to even a year before we could even distribute CGI sheets, now with the change in the guidelines which we have made in the last couple of years, the deputy commissioners had immediately acted and today also many houses have already received materials including CGI sheets and those who have not within 24 or 48 hours they will received it,” he added.
