The state Cabinet on Tuesday approved the proposal to enhance the overall benefits given to retired chief justices and retired judges of the Meghalaya High Court.

The decision was taken based on three requests made by the judiciary and the judges themselves.

Addressing media persons after the meeting, chief minister Conrad K Sangma said, “…three requests came in and as per the requests made by the judiciary and the judges themselves have written to us, we have increased the amount  – so electricity it is 1000 units per month has been agreed to be reimbursed, in terms of POL 100 litres per month as per Meghalaya rate and mobile and internet an amount of Rs 4200  per month plus taxes has been agreed by the cabinet to enhance the overall benefits to be given to retired chief justices, retired judges of the Meghalaya High Court.”

“Of course, as and when these judges are engaged in  a particular activity or made chairman of certain commissions then of course these benefits will be ceased to be given as they will get necessary funds for the activities that they will be doing but apart from that this is the additional amount which as per the requests from the judiciary has been approved by the cabinet,” he added.
