The State Cabinet on Friday approved the scrapping of the 500 megawatt thermal power project awarded to the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO).

Addressing the media after the meeting, Power Minister AT Mondal said the NEEPCO has requested scrapping of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with the government for implementation of the thermal power project in Garo Hills on March 17, 2011.

He said that the background is that now NEEPCO will be branded as a clean and green source of energy and accordingly they don’t want to continue with this project.

“We had a discussion with the CMD of NEEPCO, who is also CMD of NTPC. In this discussion, they had requested that this programme need to be scrapped and accordingly the cabinet has taken the decision that this 500 MW thermal power project which was awarded to NEEPCO will be scrapped,” Mondal said.
