Meghalaya Cabinet approves upgradation of 6 secondary schools, adds new streams in 11 higher secondary schools

The state Cabinet on Thursday approved the upgradation of six government secondary schools to higher secondary schools and introduction of new streams in 11 higher secondary schools.
Addressing media persons, cabinet minister and government spokersperson Paul Lyngdoh said, “In all, six government secondary schools will be upgraded to higher secondary schools and 11 schools, which do not have certain streams will now have (introduction of) new streams.”
“The financial implication for the introduction of these new streams and the upgradation of public schools from secondary to higher secondary schools will cost the government’s exchequer roughly Rs 10 crore per annum,” he added.
He said the decision was taken after there was a deficit in the intake capacity at the eleventh standard, which stands at 12,000 seats and there was also disproportionate concentration of higher secondary schools, mostly in urban areas of the Khasi Jaintia Hills region.
“The upgradation of these schools will meet this shortfall by adding around 9000 new seats immediately,” Lyngdoh said.
The six schools to be upgraded to higher secondary schools are: Rymbai secondary school, Umthlong-Nongthliew secondary school, Nongtalang secondary school, Tirot Sing Memorial secondary school, Laitkynsew, Tura public school and Jowai public school.
Further, Lyngdoh informed tha tthe government has also approved the introduction or adding of new streams in certain higher secondary schools, which do not have those streams currently.
“These will be the science stream for Tirot Sing Memorial Govt Higher Secondary School, Nongkhlaw, commerce stream in Govt Boys Higher Secondary School, Tura, Dalu govt secondary school, West Garo Hills, Baghmara Higher Secondary School, Govt Boys’ Higher Secondary School, Jowai and Sohkha Govt Higher Secondary School. These schools, which currently have only arts and science streams will now get the benefit of the addition of commerce as a stream,”he said.
“Arts stream, which currently is not being taught will now be introduced in Jirang Higher Secondary school, Ri Bhoi, Resubelpara Higher Secondary School, Maharam Higher Secondary School, Mawkyrwat. In the science and commerce stream, we will add United Kharkutta Govt Higher Secondary School, North Garo Hills, Malangkona Higher Secondary School, which will now also have science stream,” the minister added.
