The state BJP has sought the intervention of the Governor, Satya Pal Malik for urging the Centre to invite the banned Khasi rebel outfit, Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) for peace talks.

A delegation of the party led by its two legislators – AL Hek and Sanbor Shullai – met the governor at the Raj Bhavan on Thursday.

“We have requested him (governor) to take up with the union home minister Amit Shah as we want peace talks to happen soon with the HNLC,” Hek, also the health minister, told reporters after the meeting.

This also came after the HNLC had recently claimed responsibility for planting two IED blasts in East Jaintia Hills district.

Asked, Hek however appealed to the banned outfit to shun the path of violence.

“We appeal to our friends in the HNLC to shun violence until dialogue is there since we are already discussing it with the central government. We want them to refrain from such violence so that we can have peace talks, which has been long pending,” he said.

Stating that there is no condition being put forth, the BJP leader said, “We want to have peace talks in order for peace to prevail in the state.”
