    A police constable, who tested positive for COVID-19, succumbed to the viral infection, taking the death toll in the state to 62 on Saturday, even as 156 cases were detected pushing the count to 2,437.

    42-year-old Pulsan Dalu, an armed branch constable of the police reserve, Williamnagar in East Garo Hills district passed away at the Williamnagar civil hospital on Friday midnight, Director of Health Services (MI), Dr Aman War said.

    “The cause of death was due to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) with COVID-19, with bronchial asthma and hypertension,” he said.

    The senior medical officer informed that the fresh cases include 83 from East Khasi Hills district, 31 Ri Bhoi district, 18 West Jaintia Hills district, 8 West Garo Hills district, 8 South West Khasi Hills district, 3 South Garo Hills district, 2 South West Garo Hills district, 1 North Garo Hills district, 1 East Garo Hills district and 1 West Khasi Hills district.

    Out of the 142 recovered COVID-19 patients, Dr War said, 90 are from East Khasi Hills, 21 West Garo Hills, 8 Ri Bhoi, 7 East Jaintia Hills, 6 East Garo Hills, 4 West Jaintia Hills, 3 West Khasi Hills and 3 South West Garo Hills.

    He said 5,045 COVID-19 patients have been discharged as on date.

    The state has detected a total of 7,544 COVID-19 out of which 2,437 are active cases, 5,045 recovered and 62 deaths.

    East Khasi Hills district tops the list of districts in positive cases with 1,722 infections, that include 33 Armed Forces and Paramilitary Forces and 1,689 civilians, followed by Ri Bhoi 320 and West Garo Hills 161.

    In the other districts, 58 cases in West Jaintia Hills, 38 in South West Garo Hills, 34 in South Garo Hills, 31 in East Jaintia Hills, 31 in South West Khasi Hills, 26 in North Garo Hills, 12 in East Garo Hills and 4 in West Khasi Hills.

    “Till date, swab samples of 1, 71,415 persons have been tested of which 1,63,871 were found negative,” the senior medical official said.

    There are 46,760 entrants from outside the state, he said.
