    An 87-year-old man, who tested positive for COVID-19, died in Shillong, taking the death toll to 60 on Tuesday, even as the state has recorded yet another single-day spike of 270 positive cases, pushing the count to 2,371.

    Thakur Singh Rai, a resident of Umsning Patarim in Ri Bhoi district, who was admitted at the Shillong civil hospital on October 5, passed away today at 5 am, Director of Health Services (MI), Dr Aman War said.

    “The patient was declared dead at 5 am. The immediate cause of death was due to type-I respiratory failure with type-2 diabetes mellitus,” he said.

    The senior medical officer informed that the fresh cases include 195 from East Khasi Hills district, 26 from West Garo Hills district, 19 from Ri Bhoi district, 10 from West Jaintia Hills district, 7 from South West Garo Hills district, 6 from East Jaintia Hills district, 3 from North Garo Hills district, 2 from East Garo Hills district, 1 from South West Khasi Hills district and 1 from West Khasi Hills district.

    He said 6 are health workers, 105 are high risk contacts and 21 are from the home guard complex in Shillong.

    Out of the 115 recovered COVID-19 patients, Dr War said, 71 are from East Khasi Hills, 31 from West Garo hills, 5 from North Garo Hills, 4 from Ri Bhoi, 3 from South West Garo Hills and 1 from East Garo Hills.

    He said 4,606 COVID-19 patients have been discharged as on date.

    The state has detected a total of 7,037 COVID-19 out of which 2,371 are active cases, 4,606 recovered and 60 deaths.

    East Khasi Hills district tops the list of districts in positive cases with 1,690 infections, that include 32 Armed Forces and Paramilitary Forces and 1,658 civilians, followed by Ri Bhoi 288 and West Garo Hills 193.

    In the other districts, 44 cases are in East Jaintia Hills, 41 in South West Garo Hills, 40 in West Jaintia Hills, 22 in North Garo Hills, 17 in South West Khasi Hills, 15 in East Garo Hills, 11 in West Khasi Hills, and 10 in South Garo Hills.

    “Till date, swab samples of 1, 63,061 persons have been tested of which 1,56,074 were found negative,” the medical official said.

    There are 44,554 entrants from outside the state, he said.
