    At Least five SF-10 personnel sustained burn injuries after miscreants’ pelted stones and hurled petrol bombs at a police vehicle while escorting vegetable trucks at Ri Bhoi district.

    East Khasi Hills District police chief, Sylvester Nongtnger informed that a meeting was convened by the Block Development Officer (BDO) of Sohiong with the farmers’ association of Lawmei and those opposing Assam vehicles coming to Lawmei vegetable collection centre on Tuesday.

    He said the BDO has requested the police for security to ensure the collection centre must function and accordingly one AB Sub-Inspector, 3 SF-10 personnel and a driver were sent for patrolling to Lawmei.  

    On their return from Lawmei along with the vegetable trucks, the SP said stones were pelted and petrol bombs hurled at the police vehicle (Gypsy ML-02-0198) at Mawlyndep, Ri-Bhoi district whereby the SF-10 personnel sustained burn injuries.

    “Immediately, they were rushed to Civil Hospital Shillong. Two police personnel have been admitted where their condition is stable while the other three have been discharged after rendering first aid,” Nongtnger informed.

    He said Umiam police also rushed immediately towards the area when the incident happened adding that SOT teams were dispatched to comb the area.

    At the place of occurrence, broken bottles used as the petrol bomb, one unused petrol bomb and a small quantity of petrol in a plastic bottle were recovered and seized.

    The SP further informed that an FIR has been lodged by the Officer in-charge of Lumdiengjri police station and efforts are on to ascertain the perpetrators of the crime and take legal action as per law.
