    A 55-year-old man died of COVID-19, taking the death toll to 124 in the state on Friday.

    KK Paul of Mawbah, Shillong was declared brought dead at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) on December 7, Director of Health Services (MI), Dr Aman War said.

    A postmortem CBNAAT was done which came positive for SARS-COV2, he said. The patient was a known case of coronary artery disease and hypertension. Paul was apparently well at home when he suddenly collapsed.

    “The contributing causes that led to his death was due to coronary artery disease and Covid,” Dr War said.

    Meanwhile, 59 new cases have been detected while 44 patients have recovered from the viral infection on Friday.

    Dr War said the new cases include 50 from East Khasi Hills district, 5 West Jaintia Hills district, 2 Ri Bhoi district, 1 East Garo Hills district and 1 South West Garo Hills district. 

    Those tested positive also include 8 armed force/paramilitary force personnel, 6 health workers, 1 police personnel, 18 high risk contacts from East Khasi Hills and 1 health worker from Ri Bhoi.

    Of the 44 recovered patients, Dr War said 26 are from East Khasi Hills, 9 East Garo Hills, 6 West Garo Hills, 2 West Khasi Hills and 1 East Jaintia Hills.

    So far, the state has detected a total of 12,645 COVID-19 cases out of which 594 are active cases, 11,927 recovered and 124 deaths.

    Dr War said the fatality rate due to COVID-19 as on Wednesday is 0.98 percent.

    Of the total active cases, East Khasi Hills has 357 positive cases, West Garo Hills 88, West Jaintia Hills 59, Ri Bhoi 26, South West Garo Hills 22, East Garo Hills 15, North Garo Hills 8, West Khasi Hills 7, East Jaintia Hills 5, South West Khasi Hills 4 and South Garo Hills 3.

    “Till date, swab samples of 2,63,433 persons have been tested of which 2,50,788 were found negative,” the senior medical official said.

    There are 70,244 entrants from outside the state.
