SHILLONG:The ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) will organise an election rally on April 2, to drum up support for the United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate Jemino Mawthoh who will be contesting from Shillong parliamentary seat in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections to be held on April 11.

The decision was taken by the MDA Shillong Parliamentary Election Committee.

UDP vice president and committee’s office secretary cum coordinator Allantry F Dkhar in a statement issued on Sunday informed that the rally will be held at 2nd Ground, Polo, Shillong at 10 am.

According to him, this is an effort to further amplify and showcase to the electorate the need for unity.

“Our gratitude is not enough to explain the overwhelming response by our partners in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance. The bonhomie and synergy we experience is of the first of it’s kind,” Dkhar said.

“We request one and all to come and witness the idea of unity for peace , progress and prosperity,” he appealed.

Mawthoh who is backed by all the regional parties supporting the National People’s Party-led MDA government is pitched against opposition Congress nominee and two-time sitting Member of Parliament Vincent H Pala.

The other candidates in the fray are South Shillong legislator and BJP candidate Sanbor Shullai and three Independents – THS Bonney, Samuel Hashah and Romeo Phira Rani.

Meanwhile, the rally by the regional parties will be held ahead of Congress national president Rahul Gandhi’s visit to the state capital to address party leaders and functionaries for ensuring victory to the party from Shillong constituency.
