Heavy traffic jams were witnessed on the National Highway-6 in East Jaintia Hills district on Saturday as overloaded trucks were not allowed to ply through West Jaintia Hills district.

Hundreds of trucks were stranded at various places along the national highway as authorities of West Jaintia Hills decided to strictly implement a court order.

Sources informed that due to this, trucks which are allegedly carrying overload and coming from East Jaintia Hills were not allowed to enter West Jaintia Hills.

This has caused a lot of inconvenience to the public as the traffic flow was disrupted due to trucks being parked along the roadside of the national highway.

“Many vehicles were also stranded especially in Phramer and Tuber areas,” they said. According to sources, the problem of traffic jams had started since Friday night.

It may be mentioned here that the Meghalaya High Court has issued an order directing that load bearing capacity of goods laden vehicles plying over the Umiam bridge needs to be urgently restricted to a maximum of 20 metric tons (gross weight) of goods laden vehicles.

The Transport Department is the nodal department for checking and weighting of all goods laden vehicles as per section 114 of the CMV Act 1988 and has been authorized to restrict the total gross weight of any goods laden vehicle as required.

However, sources said most of the trucks coming through East Jaintia Hills are carrying overload.
