A government vehicle was set ablaze by masked miscreants in South West Khasi Hills district on Thursday evening.

The incident took place at around 3.30 pm at a busy Mawkyrwat market.

District police chief Maxwell B Syiem said three masked persons were involved in torching the official vehicle (a white Bolero) of the District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO).

He said one of the three unidentified persons came and broke the glasses of the vehicle with a dao while the other two poured petrol and set it on fire.

Syiem also informed that an FIR filed by the DSWO has been registered with the Mawkyrwat police station and investigation is on to nab the culprits behind the incident.

Asked, the SP said that he cannot say whether the incident has any connection with the arrest of a KSU member, who allegedly was involved in the assault of a NHIDCL engineer on Wednesday.

“We have arrested the person (activist) based on evidence,” he added.
