    Meghalaya Police detained one mini truck transporting 1556 kilograms of marijuana worth Rs.4.7 crores in East Jaintia Hills District.

    Police said on Tuesday at about 4.30 pm, information was received that one mini truck bearing Registration No, TR-05-B-1903 proceeding from Umkiang side, NH-06 towards Khliehriat is suspected to be carrying illegal contraband items.

    Police check point was set-up near Lumshnong PS, NH-06 to intercept the said truck. When the above mentioned mini truck approached the police checkpoint, it was signaled to stop.

    However, instead of stopping, it speed up and fled past the checkpoint. The ANTF and Police Team from Lumshnong Police Station immediately started chasing the mini truck and found the said truck abandoned at about 2 Kms ahead of the Police Checkpoint.

    When the cabin of the said truck was checked, it was found to be empty.

    Accordingly, the search of the body of the truck was conducted in the presence of independent witnesses and from the body of the said truck, hidden behind plastic boxes, 212 slabs tightly wrapped in brown tape weighing about 1556 Kilograms were found.

    Upon preliminary testing, the materials found inside the said slabs tested positive for Marijuana. The contraband and the mini truck have been seized accordingly. In this connection, a case vide Lumshnong PS Case No. 31(8)2022 u/s 8(c)/20(b)(ii)(c)/29 NDPS Act has been registered and efforts are on to nab the driver and the owner of the vehicle.
