The Dorbar Shnong of Umkiang village and its people lauded the NHAI in clearing the debris due to landslides from incessant heavy rainfall in the past few days resulting in huge traffic jams along Lumshnong-Ratacherra road.

However the speedy due to the speedy and timely intervention of NHAI, vehicular movement was resumed, much to the relief of the commuters.

In a letter to the Project Director, NHAI Shillong PIU , Assistant Headman of Umkiang informed many parts of the NH-6 particularly between Khliehriat-Ratacherra are in bad and deplorable conditions with several potholes on the NH-6 causing great inconvenience to the commuters and public.

This matter has to be addressed immediately because there are many potholes which are big in size and as such is a threat to the safety of the vehicle and the commuters, the letter said.

The potholes should be repaired immediately to prevent further damage of the road, Amse reasoned if not repaired now it will result in deadly condition of the road as witnessed in Umkiang market area in the last few years and many other areas.

Apart from potholes, they have also witnessed that many bridges are starting to get damaged for various reasons and therefore this issue too needs to be addressed immediately.

NHAI should undertake overall maintenance of the road now at different locations to prevent water logging, accidents, Amse underlined.

The letter read that NHAI should immediately undertake maintenance work of all the drainage systems along the highway.
