Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh on Monday said she has asked the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) to submit a report over the death of a young man who succumbed to his injuries.

Speaking to reporters, Lyngdoh said, “Yes, I have sought a report. Officially my letter has just gone to him (Director, NEIGRIHMS) with the hope that I will be able to understand better what exactly happened.”

“I send my condolences to the family that loss a very valuable soul. And I assure the family that I will inquire and I will ask what is going on.”

On Sunday, a ruckus broke at the NEIGRIHMS after a  youth succumbed to his injuries.

The family of the young man has alleged that the hospital has mishandled the situation and that there were no doctors available at the hospital leaving the injured boy unattended for nearly five hours.

The accident occured in Umiam area when the young man was riding his scooty and a Mahindra Thar coming from the opposite direction  collided with his vehicle, causing severe injuries.

When asked, the health minister said that she is not authorized to order for any inquiry into the incident.

Lyngdoh said NEIGRIHMS is a central organization and it is the bounded responsibility of the state of Meghalaya to also have eyes and ears on the institution.

She said that she will find out whether or not it is a fact that there was no doctors on call at the time of this accident that occurred.

“I have been made to understand that there were junior doctors…So I have requested the director of NEIGRIHMS to kindly inform me about the details of what exactly transpired. Once that happens, then yes, I will be able to share decisions to be taken with him,” she added.
