Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh on Wednesday laid the foundation for the up-gradation of Mairang – Rani Godown – AZRA Road (MRA).

The length of the road is 78.914 km and will start from Mairang which is the head quarter of Mairang Civil Sub Division, West Khasi Hills District and will go along Ri Bhoi District which will then continue on to Assam and will end at Azra locality, Assam which is on National Highway 37.

“I am not a fan of foundation stone laying, I’d prefer laying of inauguration stone of any project or scheme but with regards to this project I got an assurance from the contractor that this scheme will be completed by the month of May in the coming year. But I will personally give him another 2 to 3 months more as the road might not be in a good condition yet by the month of May” Lyngdoh said while speaking at the function held at Tirot Sing Memorial Hall, Pyndengumiong, Mairang.

Lyngdoh also said that any scheme or project should be meaningful and beneficial to everyone.

He said “I have seen in the past years there are sanctions given for road construction at the tune of 60 to 70 crores and vehicles that travel the road are hardly 10 to 20 in numbers, it has no meaning and can be taken care of later. But this road from Mairang – Rani Godown – AZRA (MRA) will be very useful and beneficial for the people of West Khasi Hills in particular and of the state as a whole.”

Also present on the occasion were Transport Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar and Water Resources Minister Brolding Nongsiej and Jirang legislator Sosthenes Sohtun.

In his speech, Sniawbhalang Dhar lauded the Speaker and local MLA saying it is his sheer determination that has led to the reality of this project and that it is not only the biggest project in the state but to get a sanction of almost 2 crore in a single package is not a joke. He also reiterated that this road project will be beneficial not only for the people of Mairang Constituency or of Mawthadraishan or Jirang but for the whole of West Khasi Hills District.

In his speech, Brolding Nongsiej said that the MRA road construction will help ease the traffic jam in Shillong as most can travel to Assam through this new road.

In the earlier part of the ceremony TG Nengnong, Secretary PWD (R&B) Government of Meghalaya while giving the welcome address also informed the gathering that Rs 196 crores has been sanctioned for the 78.914 kms Mairang – Rani Godown – AZRA road (MRA) and the contract for the job has been given to Shri Rocky Dhar with a 2 year completion target.

“The Mairang Constituency Educational Excellence Award 2021” was also distributed by the

Speaker M Lyngdoh to 10 students each for SSLC and HSSLC examinations.

Others present in the ceremony were A Nongbri, SDO Mairang Civil Sub – Division, PM Syiemlieh, Syiem Hima Nongkhlaw, LD Suchiang, Chief Engineer PWD (Roads), Meghalaya Shillong among others.
