Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport in Guwahati has ramped up its Wildlife Hazard Management (WHM) efforts to enhance aviation safety and prevent bird strikes. With a proactive, multi-layered approach, the airport is implementing advanced wildlife control measures, rigorous monitoring, and extensive public awareness campaigns to mitigate risks posed by birds and other wildlife.

Recognizing that effective wildlife management extends beyond the airport’s boundaries, LGBI Airport has launched multiple awareness initiatives targeting local communities, stakeholders, and residents in surrounding villages.

Public awareness campaigns at marketplaces and village panchayats, educate people on how improper waste disposal, open slaughtering, and water body formations can attract wildlife.

Local engagement programs emphasise responsible garbage disposal and land-use practices to discourage bird and animal activity near the airport.

Staff Training Initiatives ensure airport personnel are well-equipped to handle wildlife hazards effectively.

To keep the airfield clear of wildlife threats, the airport has rolled out strict protocols to minimize food waste and litter, reducing attractants for birds, clearing water channels to prevent stagnant pools that attract birds, conducting daily inspections to identify and mitigate risks such as nearby slaughterhouses, deploying acoustic devices, firecrackers, bird chasers, and solar-powered insect traps to keep birds away from critical areas and relocating animals like jackals and snakes in collaboration with forest officials.

The airport authorities are also looking for reducing bird nesting sites around high-risk zones such as Agsia, SOS Road, and Kaitasiddhi and installation of Anti-Perching Devices on runway lighting and key structures to deter birds from settling.

The WHM Team maintains round-the-clock surveillance, particularly during the monsoon and foggy conditions when bird activity spikes. Measures such as habitat modification, bird-repellent devices, and continuous airfield inspections are crucial in minimizing bird strikes.

LGBI Airport remains committed to ensuring a safe and secure environment for passengers and flight operations. By integrating technology, strategic wildlife management, and community involvement, the airport continues to set high safety standards in aviation.
