Landslide kills one, destroys homes in Guwahati; toll rises to 6 in Assam

A deadly landslide struck Guwahati’s Rupnagar area around midnight on Friday, claiming the life of a 60-year-old man and damaging two houses. The deceased has been identified as Maneswar Rajbongshi, a resident of the locality.
According to the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Kamrup Metro, the landslide occurred amid ongoing heavy rains. Rescue teams recovered Rajbongshi’s body from the debris early Friday morning.
In response to the incident, authorities evacuated residents from 12 houses in the area as a precaution. Temporary shelters have been arranged in local community halls, and public alerts are being continuously issued due to the risk of further landslides.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) confirmed that this incident has pushed the state’s landslide death toll to six this season.
Meanwhile, another landslide was reported in Haflong in Dima Hasao district. However, no casualties have been reported from that location so far. Emergency teams remain on high alert across vulnerable zones.
