Landslide blocks NH-06 in East Jaintia Hills, commuters urged to take alternate routes

A landslide occurred on Sunday evening at Dona Skur along National Highway 06, bringing all vehicular movement to a standstill.
Police said the road has been blocked by heavy debris and advised commuters to take alternative routes until the area is cleared.
No injuries or casualties were reported, but the disruption has affected traffic flow on one of the most crucial highways connecting Meghalaya to southern Assam and other northeastern states.
The road is part of the existing NH-06, which continues to face recurrent landslides, especially during the pre-monsoon season. It may be noted that this stretch lies along the alignment of a newly approved Rs 22,864 crore greenfield access-controlled highway project from Mawlyngkhung in Meghalaya to Panchgram in Assam, aimed at easing congestion and improving regional connectivity.
The upcoming corridor is expected to pass through coal and cement belts in Meghalaya and boost links to Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, and the Barak Valley region of Assam.
